New Extension Granted for Mendoza Norte Transformer Station Tender

The opening of technical and financial bids has been rescheduled for June 25 at 10 a.m. in the Patricias Hall of the Provincial Government House.

The Undersecretariat of Infrastructure and Territorial Development and the Ministry of Energy and Environment announced a new extension for the submission and opening of technical and financial bids for the construction of the Mendoza Norte Transformer Station and its complementary works. The bid opening ceremony will take place on June 25 at 10 a.m. in the Patricias Hall of the Provincial Government House.

The project aims to strengthen electricity supply across Greater Mendoza while expanding the capacity to integrate renewable energy generation in the northern region of the province. It is considered a strategic infrastructure project and a major step toward strengthening Mendoza’s energy independence.

The works will be financed through the Provincial High-Voltage Electrical Infrastructure Plan (FOPIATZAD) and the Compensation Fund administered by the Undersecretariat of Infrastructure and Territorial Development.

A Major Upgrade for the Regional Power System

Currently, electricity demand in Greater Mendoza relies heavily on the 132-kV transmission network known as the “Central Ring.” Due to sustained growth in energy consumption and years of limited infrastructure investment, the system operates close to its critical capacity limits, creating vulnerabilities during contingencies and restricting the connection of new users.

The new transformer station will help relieve congestion in the most heavily loaded sections of the network, particularly the Cruz de Piedra–Villa Nueva corridor, while increasing operational reliability by reducing dependence on the Luján de Cuyo Thermal Power Plant.

The project will also serve as a catalyst for territorial and environmental development. It will create new injection points into Argentina’s National Interconnected System (SADI) for future solar photovoltaic parks in Lavalle and Las Heras. In addition, it will provide electrical feasibility for projects in the High Mountain region and support productive development throughout northern Mendoza.

Technical Scope of the Project

The project includes a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade beginning with the connection to the existing 220-kV transmission line linking Cruz de Piedra and San Juan, allowing the new station to be integrated into the national grid.

The Mendoza Norte Transformer Station, located in Lavalle, will incorporate state-of-the-art technology and will be connected to the Las Heras Transformer Station through an 11.7-kilometer double-circuit transmission line and an additional 850-meter underground section.

The initiative also includes modernization works at the San Martín, San Esteban and Lavalle substations to ensure the efficient integration of the new capacity into the existing electrical network.

Commitment to Sustainability and Long-Term Development

The project is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and is designed to ensure access to affordable, reliable and modern energy.

By strengthening electricity transmission infrastructure, Mendoza will not only address immediate operational challenges but also position itself to lead the transition toward a more sustainable, efficient and resilient energy matrix over the coming decades.
